2011

Thomas Höppli

Thomas Höppli joined TIPS in September 2011. He is currently assisting in a SADC project as well as working on a concept note on Non Tariff Barriers to Trade. Thomas obtained a Master's degree in Business Administration/Economics (majoring in Economics) and later on a doctorate in Economics (magna cum laude) from the University of St. Gallen in Switzerland. Whilst completing his dissertation on Œ Emigration and the Brain Drain, he did a one-year research stay at the University of Cape Town with a fellowship from the Swiss National Science Foundation.

2010

Xolani Sibande

Xolani Sibande is a registered Mcom (Econometrics) student at the University of Pretoria specializing in environmental economics with a focus on water research. Prior to joining TIPS he worked for ASSET research and the University of Pretoria as a research assistant, and for SASOL as a senior commercial officer. At ASSET he worked on a Water Research Commission project on evaluating the impact of In-field Rain Water Harvesting in the area of Thaba Nchu (just outside Bloemfontein in the Free State province, South Africa) and on quantifying the economic costs associated with eutrophication in the Vaal river system.  For more information see http://www.assetresearch.org.za.

Guillaume Duhain

Guillaume Duhain is a MCom student at the University of Pretoria specializing in the Economics of Trade and Investment.  He is currently completing his dissertation on the impact of the Economic Partnership Agreements (EPAs) on the Southern African Economic Integration.  Guillaume holds a BCom (Hons) in Economics and a Badmin in International Relations from the same university.  Guillaume was an Assistant Lecturer at the University of Pretoria prior to joining TIPS.

2009

Kibii Komen

Kibii Komen is a PhD student registered in Economics at University of Pretoria and specializing in Environmental Economics under the Centre for Environmental Economics and Policy in Africa (CEEPA).

Kibii hold a Masters degree in Economics from the University of Botswana, and a B.Ed degree from the University of Nairobi. He has worked for United Nations South Africa (Secretariat), the International Union for Conservation of Nature & Natural Resources (The World Conservation Union), ASSET Research as assistant researcher and University of Botswana.

Also, he has participated in training with United Nations Institute for Training and Research, UNITAR, on; Performing Effectively in Multilateral Conferences and Diplomacy, and with United Nations Environmental Programme, UNEP on; International Environmental Law-making and Diplomacy.

Daniel Poon

Prior to joining TIPS, Daniel spent 6 months in Beijing as a visiting scholar at the Institute of World Economics and Politics (IWEP) and at the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences (CASS), researching China’s ongoing conduct of industrial policy and distilling the policy lessons for other developing countries. In 2007, Daniel was an intern with the Embassy of Canada in Beijing, assisting in information gathering, analysis and reporting of China’s evolving foreign affairs and economic policies, as well as in official bilateral meetings with government and other members of the policy community. Whilst there, Daniel spearheaded research on the changing nature of Chinese state ownership and interacted with officials (central and provincial levels) from China’s State Asset Supervision and Administration Commission (SASAC), the government agency charged with overseeing remaining state industrial assets. Prior to 2007, Daniel worked as a policy consultant with various civil society organizations.

Daniel has a BA (Honours) in Political Science from McGill University, and a MA from Carleton University’s School of Public Policy and Administration (Development Stream). In 2003-2004, he was a recipient of the China-Canada Scholar’s Exchange Programme and attended the University of International Business and Economics (UIBE) in Beijing.

Vongai Madubeko

Vongai Madubeko holds a B.Com in Management & Economics (Cum Laude) and a B Com (Hons) degree in Financial Markets with the University of Fort Hare in East London. She is currently studying towards a Masters degree in Economics, specializing in financial markets, at the same university. At the moment she is working on her thesis on the Global Financial Crisis & its Impact on the South African Economy. Vongai is particularly interested in policy formulation and responses to external shocks in the financial market.

Quinty Moroaswi

Quinty Moroaswi is a registered Mcom Agricultural Economics student at the University of Pretoria specializing in Land Reform issues. Quinty holds a BCom (Hons) in Agricultural Economics from the University of Pretoria. Prior to joining TIPS she worked as a research assistant at the University of Pretoria participating in land reform projects. She later joined the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry as an intern Agricultural Economist conducting research on agricultural products across all provinces in South Africa.

2008

Niel van Zyl

Niel is a B.A. (Hon) Political Science graduate from the University of Michigan. He is currently researching land reform issues. In conjunction with Mike de Klerk, Niel presented a research piece on land reform in Mpumalanga at the 2008 TIPS Annual Forum. Niel previously worked as an intern with the William Davidson Institute (WDI) in Ann Arbor, Michigan and with the Institute for Democracy in South Africa (IDASA) in Cape Town.

Memory Dube

Memory Dube has recently finished her thesis in the field of International Trade Law at Rhodes University. She holds an LLB degree from the University of Fort Hare. She is particularly interested in regional trade issues and the development of economic law. She is keen on developing a career in scholarly research and policy formulation and is working towards developing her skills in that area.
