The motor industry was one of South Africa's most heavily protected industries prior to the trade liberalization program that was launched in the mid-1990s. The sector has attracted enormous government attention and a wide range of public support in adjusting to the new trading environment. The centrepiece of government support has been the Motor Industry Development Program (MIDP) that was launched in 1995. The program has been modified and/or extended several times, and is currently scheduled to continue until 2012. A review is now under way to examine future policy options for the industry.
