Sithembiso Mtanga joined TIPS in April 2007 on a three-month internship programme. Whilst completing his Honours degree in General Economics at the University of Johannesburg, he assisted on a project for the Presidency, focusing on Economic Trends in South Africa, which involved rapporteuring on a number of sector-oriented workshops. During his internship, Sithembiso also provided assistance in TIPS' Resource department by cataloguing research papers and their abstracts for the Industrial Policy Reference Resource.
In July 2007, Sithembiso was appointed as economist and data support assistant at TIPS.
